I love cosmetics in fact anything beauty related. If they smell good, look pretty, are affordable and do their job I'm hooked. Yet, over the years I have wondered what is in all these 'magic' concoctions? What is this stuff that I have been slathering all over my body day in day out? Everyone has that moment when they look at the back of a bottle and see this mysterious word INGREDIENTS. For too long I have ignored this word. I have left it to be deciphered by chemists and cosmetic regulatory bodies.Words like Disodium EDTA, Fragrance,Methylparaben, PEG-100Stearate,Vinyl Neodecanoate Copolymer, Phenyl Trimethicone, Mica and Aluminium Starch Octenylsuccinate flashed before my eyes. These are just a tiny sample taken from the dozens listed on my hairspray, moisturiser and cheek highlighter.
How do I understand what these ingredients are when I can barely pronounce them? I have had a revelation a big one I am scared by them - the unknown. Scared by all those things I have been using for years.
The only way to combat this is to make it my mission to find the safest products I can and not fall into the trap 'ignorance is bliss'. Now with the wonder of the internet, knowledge is at my finger tips. I have a feeling I will be getting very acquainted with the EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetic Database http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ (this is not sponsored!!) plus bothering a dear friend of mine who is a chemist. I am not about to throw out everything I own or look-up every ingredient. I am going to look-up my favourite products. Any new products I buy I am going to make sure I know what the ingredients mean.
So I have a task for you. Pick up your most loved cosmetic and read the ingredients. Look up the longest scariest looking word. Comment below on what product it was, the ingredient and what you found out about it.
I must make a disclaimer I am not against all synthetic chemicals some are very safe just like some natural products aren't. This is about educating ourselves so that we can make the best decisions.
Good luck and happy detective work!
Hetty xo
p.s. Would you guys like me to do ingredient detective work on my favourite cosmetics?
